Jeff Wingard, who has spent his career working on housing and homelessness including time with the social planning council, McMaster and the city, will be the speaker. He will reflect on what he’s learned and some strategies that we can implement. Among the points he may make are that our housing situation has become a crisis because of, among many factors, gutted rental control, the neoliberal shift to financialized housing that has ramped up the pursuit of maximum profits, and the failure of federal and provincial governments to invest sufficiently to keep up the supply of homes affordable for a growing percentage of Canadians whose incomes haven’t kept pace with rising housing costs, for purchase or rent.
