When Maclean’s magazine did a cover story a year ago on Toronto’s growing tenant movement, it focused its article on Sharlene Henry, a longtime tenant in a high-rise apartment building where she is leading a rent strike. Henry will bring her expertise to our November 15th event, Keys to Affordable Living: A Hamilton Tenant Forum, in our sanctuary, joining academic housing expert Dr. Carolyn Whitzman and several local tenants. Rent strikes attempt to use collective action to convince landlords to negotiate and to withdraw proposed increases, at a time of soaring rents (see item below) and limited new construction of rental units, especially affordable units.
This live evening event is a tailor-made learning opportunity for the mix of people currently in our congregation and younger Hamiltonians whose participation we’d like to see grow. And there will be opportunities to discuss what we will do to get the affordable housing every age group needs and every income group.
