The Affordable Housing Team is grateful to the church board for approving a brief submitted to the Standing Committee on Finance as it considers proposals it will make to the federal government for inclusion in the spring 2022 budget. The brief urged the committee to endorse the goal of ending core housing need by 2030—triple the current goal—and specific initiatives in three areas:
- Protecting existing affordable private-sector rental units from investors seeking maximized profits through evicting current tenants and raising the rent
- Speeding up approvals of funding for affordable housing projects
- Shifting money from federal incentives for private-sector rental housing, where they aren’t creating many affordable units, to funding for permanent non-profit and co-operative housing projects.
