Stop Plastic Pollution: Call to action for the next Ontario government
Plastic packaging is the biggest single source of plastic waste in Ontario and most of it ends up in landfills, incinerators and the natural environment.
The next provincial government must act to:
- Expand deposit return to make sure beverage containers get collected, refilled or recycled.
- Improve “Extended Producer Responsibility” rules including new Blue Box regulations, that are meant to shift responsibility for waste management off the municipalities and taxpayers and on to the companies whose packaging create the waste
- Reject the incineration of plastics, including any proposal to turn plastic waste into fuel and/or chemicals. Burning plastics is polluting and expensive.
Ask your local candidates… Will your government:
- Expand deposit-return to ALL beverage containers?
- Increase and enforce recycling targets for companies that put packaging on the market in Ontario?
- Reject false solutions to dealing with plastic waste such as burning it and/or turning it into fuel?
- Make companies responsible for all waste in Ontario, and not just the 40% that comes from households?
