Things got much worse for Hamilton tenants in the past year, the latest statistics from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation for apartment rentals show. The average rent for vacant units in the old city of Hamilton was $1,498 a month in October, up a staggering 14 per cent in a year. You’d need an income of $60,000 for that rent to be affordable. In the city’s central area, the average was $1,889. Vacancy rates dropped sharply in all areas of the city except Stoney Creek, so there was less choice. The number of units in apartment buildings actually declined slightly.
