City of Hamilton staff have written a really clear summary of the expected impacts on tenants of the provincial government’s recently approved Bill 60. It is bad news.
According to city staff:
- The bill is “expected to increase evictions in our community, with the most significant impacts being experienced by those who are already most vulnerable to housing loss.”
- “An increase in evictions is likely to result in greater service demand for emergency shelter space and access to housing benefits as well as an increase to the city’s unsheltered population.”
- The changes in the bill will “erode existing tenant rights and protections and are likely to add significant pressure onto systems already under pressure.”
