Each year, people committed to ending homelessness gather to mourn and honour those who have died because they lack a home, and to re-commit to ensuring everyone has a safe, secure, appropriate home they can afford. This year’s commemoration is at the City Hall forecourt at 4 p.m. today, Thursday Oct. 9.
At least 116 people experiencing homelessness in Hamilton died between June 2021 to May 2024.
Their average age at death was just 45.
Homelessness is many things, but ultimately, it’s about losing one’s home—and high rents, housing insecurity and no-fault evictions are major contributors.
