Important June Dates

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada
The House of Commons designated June as National Aboriginal History Month in 2009 and the name was later changed to National Indigenous History Month in 2017.  Additionally, June 21st, the Summer Solstice, has been a time for Indigenous communities to celebrate their culture for generations.  There are many events in our area celebrating this month.

Juneteenth, June 19th, in the United States
This day marks emancipation from slavery and the long and violent struggle for Black people to be recognized as equally human.  While this is not an official holiday in Canada, it is an important day for us to reflect on how our settler-colonial history has contributed to ideas about race in Canada.
