Climate Justice – How climate change disproportionately affects Indigenous communities.
Traditional Indigenous communities are stewards of the land with a deep understanding of the interdependence of their existence. Communities that live on and by the land are affected by the changing climate and its impact on the resources on which they depend. But when the resources of their lands become desirable commodities in addressing climate change, the resulting decisions are profoundly important to those communities.
The Ring of Fire in the remote James Bay Lowlands covers around 5,000 square kilometers and is estimated to contain billions of dollars in valuable minerals, according to the Ontario government, minerals that could be used to manufacture electric batteries.
