With board support, the Affordable Housing Team submitted a brief to the federal government’s consultation on its 2023 budget on October 7. The brief can be viewed here. It urged nine actions, including:
- Increasing the grant portion of affordable housing projects to 40 per cent. The government is proposing to cut it to 10 per cent, which would make new projects impossible.
- Adopt the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association goal that one in 10 of all housing units be community (non-profit, affordable) housing within a decade, up from 5 per cent.
- Develop, with Indigenous organizations, an urban, rural and northern Indigenous Housing Strategy within the year. It has been promised since 2017.
