Plant Native Species

Doug Tallamy is an entomologist at the University of Delaware.  In this webinar he presents a grassroots science-based solution to the biodiversity crisis and explains why it is so urgent. We need to save the ecosystems on half the planet since nature is not optional. While there are acres of parkland, it is not enough to address the problem.  We need to create natural habitats where we live and the most obvious low hanging fruit is the lawn.  We can decrease our lawns, increase native plants and reduce invasives.  Doing this supports the local food web, sequesters carbon, cleans and manages water and supports pollinators.  Any size property will do. Earth stewardship resides with each of us. It empowers each of us to think about the piece of property we can start with.  If you don’t have access, help others.

While the video has been produced in the US, the concepts apply equally here. Doug Tallamy has presented frequently in Canada, including at the RBG.
