The Keeping Six Quarterly is a zine (like a magazine but shorter and produced independently) that is created with, by and about people who use drugs, are unhoused or precariously housed. The zine was conceived as a tool for communication and for advocacy in the broader community. The more we understand about the people whose lives are impacted by homelessness or drug use, the more we can grow in compassion and understanding. The zine raises awareness about the Keeping Six organization and has been a great source of community building for the group. There are many people with talents to share but who lack an outlet. We hope to have hard copies available in the library soon.
Another way to get involved? Free Keeping Six Art and Writing workshops – they are open to everyone! Workshops with a focus of providing access to art and writing to people who use drugs or unhoused. Everyone is invited to participate since the best way to understand another person is to get to know them in a welcoming supportive environment.
Writing drop in – bring something you have been working on or just come and start with the daily prompt.
Art Workshops – Every four weeks a new professional artist runs the workshop. Most recently – lino cut printing, acrylic painting, graphic street art. Coming up next is henna art.
When: Every Wednesday Writing 2-330. Art 330-530
Where: New Vision aka The Music Hall 24 Main St W Hamilton – enter east side glass doors
Who: all are welcome
Why: build community with our unhoused neighbours in a creative environment. When we are making art together, we are all simply artists in that moment.
