Sacajawea Non-Profit Housing

Firekeeper Luke John tends a fire at a ceremony to bless Sacajawea Non-Profit Housing Inc.’s 18 West Avenue South project. This congregation is fundraising to support that project.

Our congregation is supporting Sacajawea Non-Profit Housing Inc., an affordable housing provider for Indigenous members of the community. It will start construction this spring on a 23-unit apartment building at 18 West Avenue South. By late 2018, we had raised more than $26,000 to help pay for a common room in the building that will provide space for vital social, educational and spiritual events for tenants and outside Indigenous groups and help build a sense of community and belonging.

We work with community partners to develop educational and advocacy efforts to advance the subcommittee’s goal. More than 85 people attended the church’s Housing in the Hammer: Affordable Challenges and Opportunities in November 2017 and we co-hosted, with the Hamilton Roundtable on Poverty Reduction, an affordable housing panel for municipal candidates in September 2018.
