Sunday morning service is one moment in the week when we gather together as a Beloved Community. It is often a transformative moment, reminding us of our connections to each other and to all of life.
Ours is a diverse community. We come together holding a variety of beliefs. And yet, the Sunday service provides a focal point and regular inspiration for our lives.
With faith, hope, and love

COVID Policy (April 2023)
Covid Policy Update (April 2023)
Throughout the Covid-19 Pandemic The First Unitarian Church of Hamilton has followed the council and advice of medical experts in our community as we responded to the pandemic. After careful consideration, this team of advisors, the Board of Directors, and Church Executive, have approved new Covid-19 measures. We are happy to share that masks are now encouraged and not required on Sunday morning. A space for those who choose to mask will be available as well. And we will soon welcome the return of coffee hour.
We will continue to strengthen and expand our online presence and grow our connections and community beyond our church building. All of our members and friends are important to us and we are committed to ensuring we are available to anyone seeking our life affirming message of hope, love, and justice.
We encourage everyone to take good care and to participate online and through digital connections, if you feel unwell. Even as we welcome a shift in our Covid Policy, we have a collective commitment to care for each other by caring for ourselves.
If you have any questions or concerns, please talk with members of our Board of Trustees, Gail Rappolt from Caring Connections, or Rev. Jamie Boyce. We are happy to talk with you.
Are masks still required on Sunday morning?
No but they are highly recommended. We ask that the personal choice of each congregant be respected, if they choose to wear a mask or not.
What if I choose to remain masked?
This is absolutely respected and there will be a special section in the sanctuary for those who wish to social distance and remain masked.
Will proof of vaccination still be required to attend services and programs?
No. With over 80% of the Hamilton community fully vaccinated we no longer feel the need to monitor vaccination status. We do encourage everyone to get vaccinated and to stay up to date on boosters as eligible. If the local government encourages us to track vaccinations once
again we will return to this practice.
Will we be able to sing during services?
Yes. Sing all you wish!
Will coffee hour return this spring?
Coffee Hour has a new coordinator and will resume soon!
Will Sunday service and other programs be available online?
Yes. We are committed to being and becoming an inclusive community. Sunday services will continue to be offered online with an opportunity for an online “coffee hour” to connect with friends and meet new people. In addition, most of our programs have an option for online participation.
If you have questions about accessibility you can contact Rev. Jamie at jamie@uuhamilton.ca or the Support Services Manager, Chris McCoy at chris@uuhamilton.ca.
We are excited about the congregational year and look forward to visiting with you in person and online!
Regular Service Elements
Although Unitarian worship services tend to be less liturgical and ritual-based than those in many traditional churches, our services do contain a number of common elements which move the gathered community through an hour-long experience of centering, reflecting and returning.
Gathering Music
A time to enter quietly into the spirit of community in preparation for worship.
Welcome and Announcements
Welcome and information about the ongoing life and events within the community.
Opening Words or Invocation
Begin the service poetically and name our purpose in gathering.
Chalice Lighting
The flaming chalice is the most widely used Unitarian Universalist symbol. While its origins are varied, it has come to symbolize the flame of religious freedom in the cup of love and acceptance for all. We light the chalice to begin the service, to call the community together and to signal our readiness to begin worship. History of the Flaming Chalice.
Hymns
Singing is a joyous form of self-expression. Blending our voices together reminds us that we are not alone. We sing to awaken our spiritual life and energy, and to praise creation.
Story for All Ages
Our stories are for everyone. They allow children, youth and adults alike to explore the morning’s message from another point of view. After the story, we sing to the children as they leave for further exploration in our Religious Education Program.
Meditation
With music, words, silence and the opportunity to light candles, congregants participate in a time of reflection and prayer.
Readings
Chosen to highlight a question, thought or idea that is further explored in the sermon.
Musical Offerings
Are for many the emotional heart of the service, speaking to our deepest needs and longings, expressing our most sublime hopes and dreams. Our worship features a great diversity of musical styles and selections, many of them offered by volunteers.
Sermons
The sermon is designed to be the inspirational centrepiece of the service, blending elements from music, story, song, readings and prayer into one coherent message. For many Unitarians, the sermon helps to put “life through the fire of thought” (Unitarian minister and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson). At its best, the sermon is the core element in the transformative experience that the service is creating.
Offertory
Unitarian Universalist congregations are all self-supporting. The ministries, programs, worship and outreach of the congregation depend upon the tangible contributions of their members and friends. Supporters of the church’s Vision transform their gifts into ministry by the act of giving. Many members pledge monthly or yearly to support the church’s ministries, but the weekly collection is an important act of generosity on the part of all who attend.
Closing Words
A reminder to live the coming days in the spirit of our Unitarian Universalist faith, with truth, service, justice, acceptance and love as our touchstones.
