The Housing Affordability Crisis is Mostly a Renters’ Crisis.

Learn more on Friday November 15th

We sometimes talk about Canada as a nation of homeowners. But more than one in three households is renting, with renting common among all age groups. And renters carry the greatest burden of the crisis of affordability. That’s why our Friday November 15th housing event, Keys to Affordable Housing, is focused mainly on the situation of tenants. Please register at Eventbrite (so we can provide enough food). https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/keys-to-affordable-housing-a-hamilton-burlington-tenant-forum-tickets-1060413889489

Tenant households across Canada are four times more likely to be struggling with high costs—or crowded or inadequate housing—than homeowners (it’s called “core housing need”). In Hamilton, that rises to five times. High rents make it very difficult for young families to save, including for a down payment on a house. So young adults rent longer than they may have hoped or they push to their financial limit to buy, maybe borrowing for the down payment, too, leaving them at high risk with so much debt. And even beyond the struggle to pay soaring rents, renting households have less security than owners.

We’ll hear from Hamilton tenants and a former Hamiltonian leading a tenants’ union in Toronto, Sharlene Henry. And we’ll get the big picture from one of Canada’s most-sought-after housing experts, Dr. Carolyn Whitzman. All with a focus on solutions. You don’t want to miss it.
