Five members of the Affordable Housing Team spoke at last Sunday’s National Housing Day service. Through different stories and emphases, two themes were central. First, we need to remove exceptions to rent control laws that allow huge rent increases and no-fault evictions that are making rents unaffordable, creating insecurity for tenants and resulting in massive loss of affordable rental units (we lose 23 affordable units for every new unit we build). We need to support tenants over profit maximization. And we need vastly larger commitments of capital and operating funds to build 50,000 to 100,000 net new units of deeply affordable non-profit and co-operative housing, every year.
