The Rental Nightmare Explained

Maclean’s magazine has a really interesting article this week on what it’s like to be a renter today—and about a third of Canadian households (34.3 per cent in Hamilton) rent their homes. From cockroaches to high rents and a constant search for a stable affordable apartment, with all the stress involved, today’s renters are forced into major trade-offs around where they can afford to work, whether to create families and have children and who to live with to share costs. It’s important context to know that rent control laws have been substantially weakened in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia since 2018 and don’t exist in Alberta. https://macleans.ca/longforms/a-renters-nightmare/
