Sunday May 17 2-4:30 pm in our church
Documentary and panel will be a great overview of our affordable housing crisis
Film shows “a menu of solutions” from across Canada
The documentary Thinking Beyond the Market: A Film About Genuinely Affordable Housing is a cross-Canada tour of best practices that, if applied broadly, could significantly mitigate the housing crisis. Please register (the link is below) for this showing at our church on Sunday May 17 at 2 p.m. followed by a panel discussion. Registering helps us plan. And bring friends.
The film basically asks, what kind of Hamilton do we want, what kind of Canada—one where only the few can afford good housing or one where all of us belong. The best practices shown include Hamilton’s renoviction bylaw; stronger rent controls; building non-profit housing on public land; and a massive Indigenous project on Indigenous land near Vancouver. Dr. Brian Doucet, housing researcher and associate professor at the University of Waterloo, directed and will be present at the screening, along with a panel of local experts to discuss the film’s ideas.
