Dear Premier Ford (send separately) Dear Minister Calandra:

The province needs to stop allowing unlimited rent increases on vacant rental units. The resulting rent hikes are unconscionably large. In 2023, the average rent rose by between 15 and 19 per cent in different parts of Hamilton, according to CMHC. That’s five times inflation. Vacancy rates were up, which is supposed to moderate rent increases. Instead, landlords took advantage of vacancies to really boost rents. They pushed up average rents on vacant two-bedroom units by a staggering 31.2 per cent last year.

The prospect of such huge rent increases is a huge incentive for landlords to get rid of long-term tenants, by legal or other means. That’s increasing homelessness.

This must stop. Rents on vacant units must be controlled.

I welcome your response.

Sincerely yours,
