At our housing event this week, Brian Sibley, executive director of Kiwanis Homes, credited Sacajawea and its executive director Melanie McAulay with inspiring his organization to launch a program to build 1,000 new affordable homes by 2028. Kiwanis, with about 1,000, hadn’t built anything since the 1990s. Sacajawea, with 28 units, began a program in 2015 that has more than doubled its size, and, Brian said, “shamed us” into returning to active building. A great tribute to a great leader and organization that we have been proud to work alongside since 2016.
