What do we want? – Affordable Homes.

How many?  – Lots.

When? – Now!

Social Housing and Human Rights https://www.moresocialhousing.ca/ has a campaign calling for the federal government to create of a minimum of 50,000 net new not-for-profit housing units a year, over and above any affordable units that are lost, every year for 10 years. The homes are to permanently rent for less than 30 per cent of the gross household income of those in housing need. And the campaign calls for other measures beyond that to meet the needs of everyone in housing need. There are 1.45 million households in core housing need in Canada, a significant underestimation of need, so a net increase of 50,000 units a year would be a great start but likely not enough. It is many times the number of units the current federal government has delivered, many of which have higher rents and are “affordable” for at most 20 years. The Conservatives have not announced plans to build any not-for-profit units. The NDP says it would “create at least 500,000 units of quality, affordable housing in the next 10 years.” The Green Party would double the number of social housing units, an increase of between 655,000 and 890,000 units, with no time period stated.
