This is World Homelessness Week and the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness is asking you to sign a letter urging federal and provincial governments to take five steps to end homelessness. Our Affordable Housing Team would insist that the fifth of those steps doesn’t go far enough. The CAEH urges the federal government to increase the number of affordable housing units it plans to build to at least 350,000. That is only about half what is needed. We do agree that rents should be geared to income, rather than the current practice of setting them at 80 per cent of average market rents.
