The federal government has no money left for its main program for building non-profit housing. All the money for repayable contributions under the New Construction-Community Housing Sub-Stream of the Affordable Housing Fund has been spent. This is particularly bad news since the government announced in November that it had extended the fund to 2028-29 and as a result, organizations have been preparing plans for new housing, plans that will now have to be put on hold.
We encourage you to join the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association in asking the federal government to direct significant new money to that program, now. You can read their letter at https://chra-achru.ca/parliamentary-and-government-communications/ (it’s the first item) and send emails to mark.carney@parl.gc.ca and the Housing Minister gregor.robertson@parl.gc.ca We desperately need to increase the supply of non-profit and co-op housing units by something like four times the current supply and we need to keep construction workers working during the current construction slowdown.
